Milan, Italy – Nisida Environment participated to the presentation of the documentary "Flegrea – Un Futuro per Bagnoli", screened on Friday, September 15, 2023, as part of the Visioni dal Mondo film festival in Milan.
The film, selected in the “Italian Competition – New Talent First Work” section, was introduced to the audience by director Stefano Romano and producer Raffaele Vaccaro. The documentary tells the story of Bagnoli, a symbolic neighborhood of Italian deindustrialization, through the lives of Ciro and Federica, two young residents fighting for a better future.
Director’s Notes: A Look Beyond the Past
The festival organizers shared the words of the director, explaining the philosophy behind Flegrea:
"The story of Flegrea stems from a question: what is the relationship in Bagnoli between environmental disaster and social crisis? But Flegrea also stems from a rejection—the rejection of traditional reporting and investigative journalism as a means of focusing only on the past. That’s why we turned to the cinema of Agostino Ferrente, to a present filled with hope, and to stories like that of Ciro and Federica. Two siblings, but above all, two residents of the neighborhood who, like many others, fight every day for a future they hope to one day see realized."
The film offers an intimate and realistic narrative, steering away from mere denunciation of degradation and instead choosing to highlight the resilience and hope of a community in transformation.
