Innovative Sediment Management: Success at the Third LIFE Sedremed Conference in Helsinki
Helsinki, Finland – The third LIFE Sedremed Conference, hosted by the Finnish company Ekogrid Oy, brought together international experts to discuss the progress of the project on the remediation of contaminated marine sediments and the challenges of sustainable sediment management.
A particular focus was placed on the environmental situation of the Baltic Sea, one of the most vulnerable marine areas in Europe, affected by severe eutrophication, the accumulation of persistent organic pollutants, and the presence of heavy metals in coastal sediments. Experts highlighted how long-term pollution poses a threat not only to marine biodiversity but also to the quality of fisheries and the safety of maritime economic activities.

During the conference, project partners presented the results of pilot site experiments, demonstrating the potential of electrokinetics in enhancing bioremediation processes for contaminated sediments. Discussions underscored the need for integrated strategies to restore marine ecosystems, combining advanced technological solutions with effective environmental policies.
The event engaged institutions, academics, and industry stakeholders, strengthening international cooperation and emphasizing the key role of the LIFE Sedremed project in promoting innovative and eco-friendly methods for marine ecosystem protection and the restoration of degraded coastal areas.
